Governing City Food Systems for Climate Change resilience
02/11/2022 @ 10:00 - 12:30
Climate change will increasingly affect metropolitan food systems. Extreme weather events can disrupt transport and power infrastructure as well as the production of staple crops in the global agricultural hinterland supplying cities. Conversely, food production, processing, distribution and retail contribute significantly to the emissions causing climate change. Rapidly growing urban populations will increase demand for affordable staples, intensifying agricultural pressures on areas of food production. The anticipated food price increases and acute supply shortages are likely to affect the poorest most severely, exacerbating food insecurity, malnutrition and economic marginalisation. This poses a significant challenge to the sustainability and security of metropolitan areas, demanding governance responses that increase the resilience of metropolitan food economies in ways that foster justice, equity and health. However, the connections between climate change and food systems entail many uncertainties and the data on which to base governance responses is not yet fully available. This leaves more questions than answers for government officials and practitioners hoping to respond to these looming challenges. This Food Imbizo aims to create a conversation in which to explore what research and data are needed to help mainstream food systems transition into climate change resilience planning and decision-making. Join us for a roundtable discussion with experts on the food system and climate change from Cape Town, Ethekwini and Johannesburg to reflect on:
